My Hasselblad rejuvenation
About a month ago I decided to buy a whole new photographic system. After renting
and experimenting with a digital medium format (DMF) system from Don's Photo,
I ended up buying a full system from a local photographer, not just a new camera
but a whole new imaging system: a Hasselblad 500c/m including multiple lenses.
The reason I purchased a whole new system, is that over the last year I feel
I've lost my photo mojo. Since I spend so much time and effort trying to make
a living with commercial photography, I ended up wandering away from the more
creative side of my photography including doing any personal photography projects.
Even when I'm out of the city exploring new areas, shooting landscapes and starscapes
(which are my passion), I always have it in the back of my mind that I could
end up using the shots commercially in some way. This has caused me to get away
from all the funky angles and different effects like zooming and motion blur
that used added a unique edge to my photography.
After noticing this, I wanted a way to get back the magic and fun of photography,
my photo mojo if you will! At first, I went out and shot film again, both slides
and colour infrared (some of the last colour IR in existence sadly since it has
been discontinued) but still wasn't satisfied since it was a very similar system
and process to what I was used to. However, this new digital medium format (DMF)
system has been a great inspiration.
With a Hasselblad, although there are techniques to shoot faster, you simply
don't want to. The system itself makes you want to slow down and take the time
to consider your photograph more than you would with the more versatile 35mm
format. I'm very happy I've found this new system as it's allowed me to rekindle
that "go out and play" side of my photography and even gotten me back
to doing the same with my 35mm systems.
The above gallery contains several examples of the more fun side of my photography
and also includes resolution tests which are tested side by side with my 35mm
digital system. You can find a review of my new equipment including side by side

D3 First photos
My first impressions of the D3 are very good. After shooting with it for just
a short time you can already tell that it's well beyond the D300 as it captures
much more subtle tones thusly more dynamic range, it handles better, the second
CD slot is really useful and the ergonomics of the camera make it so nice to
shoot with.

Today I was the first person in Winnipeg to take ownership and shoot off a few
frames with my new Nikon D3. (Big thanks again to Don's Photo!)
My initial thoughts after receiving the D300 last week where: "Do I really
need
a
D3
as
well?" and now with the new camera in hand and after having taken a few
test shots with
it I can answer a resounding "Yes!" DOF is one of those separators
between the cameras as well as high ISO. The D3 is truly in a different league
like comparing a Mustang to a Ferrari, both great vehicles but clearly one of
them does a
much better job!

D300 test shots 1

Today I was the first person to take ownership of a Nikon D300 in Winnipeg. Huge
thanks to Don's photo! I'm also looking forward to receiving my Nikon D3 later
on
this
week
or early next week.
After some quick tests with the D300 I realize that it's much more than just
an upgraded D200. The body feels more solid and along with the new magnesium
alloy grip the whole feeling of the system is more solid. I've also been very
impressed with the few tests I've done at higher ISOs all the way up to 3200
which looks like ISO800 on a D200.
More tests and updates to come.

for the 2008 Festival
du Voyageur. I'm obviously honoured to be shooting within my community
and happy
that Festival officials where "such big fans" of my photos from last
year.

Free portrait and model photo shoots!
I'm looking for a few models to test out some new cameras and you do not have
to be a professional. I currently have one of the cameras and will be receiving
two more in late November/early December. So if you have ever wanted to have
portraits or model photos done and haven't been able to afford them, now is the
time since I'll be happy to do it for free as long as I can use the photos on
my sites.

Some tests from my new Hasselblad!
I just bought a full Hasselblad system including three lenses and a bunch of
other goodies. The first is a full view (resized for web) of a full sized 16mp
image
and
the
second is a cropped photo.
Shooting in MF is a real challenge and has it's advantages (quality/MP) over
DSLR
(versatility). More tests to come.

Gas line break at 500 Tache
A worker installing fence posts accidentally pierced a gas line today at 500
Tache in St. Boniface. The gas could be smelled from over two blocks away and
could be seen spewing from the pipe. Manitoba Hydro was called in to shut down
the line and residents of 500 Tache where evacuated.

Winnipeg from a helicopter
My ride in a helicopter.
Once in a while I get a really special opportunity that I just have to step back
and
appreciate,
this was one of those cases when I got to ride in a helicopter.
For a long time I've wanted to fly high above Winnipeg however, in a hot air
balloon, they can't guarantee that you'll even come anywhere near Winnipeg, small
aircraft and helicopters cost about $1000/hr to rent so both of these where out
of the question. Until that is I had the opportunity to fly on News1. Huge thanks
to
all
involved, Vic, Colin, Matt, Kristin and others.
Info about helicopters, Matt the pilot gave me the following information. Traffic1
flies 1700ft above sea level. Winnipeg is 700ft above sea level so we where flying
about 1000ft off the ground. For comparison, CanWest Global tower is 419ft tall & a
football field is 300ft long. In other words we where flying at just over 2 CanWest
buildings or over 3 football
fields high.

don't forget that this Sunday is the artist's reception and the official opening
to my gallery. Please come out and take a look at all my printed photos which
are so much more impressive than the small online versions. You do not need an
invitation to attend and the event is free so be sure to come out and bring anyone
else who likes photography.
The gallery and artist's reception take place at the Wayne Arthur Gallery on
186 Provencher (just two blocks over the Provencher bridge). The Artist's reception
is Sunday, January 7th from 1-4pm. My gallery is open all month.
