Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all my family, friends, clients and everyone else who takes a look at my work! I sincerely wish you all the best in 2013, but all the worst in 2014, JUST KIDDING! Have a great 2013!

Portrait photography for annual report: YMCA/YWCA
A really amazing part of photography is that I get to photograph some really special people such as the case with Sharon who overcame both weight and health issues thanks to the amazing staff at the MYCA/YWCA Winnipeg.
Today I participated in another group show at the Wayne Arthur Gallery, or as I like to call it "The other WAG". I had one of my helicopter photos from this summer in there at 24x36".

Obviously not having kids yet I'm not current as to all the kids shows these days (remember Saturday morning cartoons in the 80's? Best EVER!) but after seeing this it made me want to jump right back into them! Amazing event!

Time-lapse photography:
The largest show ever to come into the MTS Centre with 37 semi trailers and more scales than you can fill a pool with, "How to train your dragon" was not only an amazing show for kids of all ages (this big kid included) but it was the biggest load in and extremely interesting to watch. Here is a time-lapse I took using multiple time-lapse cameras of all kinds from DSLRs to the new GoPro Hero 3:

Event photography: Dave's retirement from the YMCA/YWCA Winnipeg
You know you've been with a company for a long time when you start to see their employees retire. Dave was the head honcho over at the YMCA/YWCA Winnipeg so I've photographed and worked with him many times but nowhere near how much other people had which was evident at the event. He'll obviously be massively missed!

Today as the official photographer for the MTS Centre I offered the opportunity for anyone in my photo club (WPGphoto.com) to photograph Journey at the MTS Centre and with seven (7) applications I chose Shaun to shoot it in my place. Thanks Shaun!

I've been a big fan of Metric for a long time now, ever since I got past my imperial stage...but seriously it's always great to be able to photograph a band you like so much.

Super high resolution stock photography: The biggest image of Winnipeg!
Two years ago I purchased the first new generation Gigapan available in Canada. So new they hadn't even finished the mounts on it. Back then I set out to take THE largest image of Winnipeg, which I believe I did and it was just over a 5 gigapixel image. Now, two years later I've taken another Gigapan and I beat my last images size substantially!
The image is 8.56 gigapixels. That means 8560 megapixels. Most digital cameras have an average of around 16 megapixels so doing the math means this one is 535 times larger than your average digital image!
If I printed this image it would be 581 inches (48 feet) wide by 163 inches (13.5 feet) tall at 300 dpi!
Please take a look at it in high resolution online by clicking the image below:
Concert photography co-ordination: As the official photographer and photography coordinator for events at the MTS Centre, I have once again chosen Bobby who is trying hard to become a full time photographer as my replacement shooter for the Wiz Khalifa concert tonight. Thanks Bob, have fun!

This was a very cool event to cover as I've seen past events on TV and I even got to taste some of the dishes! (Thanks Mel!)
I had also taken many of the chef's photos several months back and I got the opportunity to see them printed on the large posters for each chef at the event.

World Wide Photo walk: Today I led a group of around 45 people around the Forks and St Boniface in an international event: World Wide Photo walk. This is a very cool initiative of Scott Kelby started 5 years ago. This was my first time leading a photo walk and I really look forward to next year already. It was really fun planning a walk, leading it and chatting with all the photographers and then having the after party at the Spaghetti Factory and just chatting about photography all day.
Thanks to Merlin for the photo!

Even as the official photographer for an event or company, you don't always do all the photography on them. This is because companies work with ad agencies and for specific projects, like last year's ad campaign for FDV, I didn't get to work on it. However this year, FDV had me come in to do their promo work. It's always a great feeling when a company wants you to do all their work. It creates a strong relationship that helps the quality of the end product!

We all know Co-Op gas but did you know we have a car co-op here in Winnipeg? It may not be as big as Vancouver's, but it could be soon!
This is the reason I love being a photographer, you meet so many different people and learn so much!

Event photography for Canadian Heritage
It's always an adventure working for any Government of Canada agency. Today after a fairly standard press conference shoot, Minister Moore decided to leave behind his assistants and sneak away to please one of his passions, Canadian history, in this case, the Nonsuch in the Manitoba Museum's gallery. Due to his schedule being so restricted, there was some confusion surrounding this side trip, and he had to use every extra second of his time for that day to check it out.
Sometimes the media shows people in one way or another but it's always cool to see people just being people like with Minister Moore today, embracing his passion.

In the news: An article came out the other day in the Lance (local to St. Boniface, found in the Winnipeg Free Press) about my photo club's group gallery show. I was interviewed last week and was really impressed by the writer's way of...cleaning up my messy thoughts and putting them together in a really nice article. Thanks Simon!
In the news: Today an article about my national stamp came out in La Liberté. You can read it here.
I chatted with them originally about my photo club's group gallery as well as photography in general, in the process of creating the article it looks like they concentrated on the stamp.

In the news: This morning I was interviewed in French by CKSB/Radio-Canada Radio-Réveil, Geneviève Murchison about my article that comes out today in the French newspaper: La Liberté which is about the national stamp I shot on Canada Day. The five minute interview was also generally about my career including what role French plays in getting contracts as well as about my photo club, the Winnipeg Photo Community.

A few years back I had to stop shooting weddings, not because I didn't have a ton of fun at them, but because I wanted to have my OWN wedding eventually and the only way to do that is to have more personal time! And it paid off!
Almost two years ago I met Camille, a journalist from France, working in Winnipeg for the last 4-5 years and we hit it off big!
Today, we had OUR wedding and, as I'm sure you're wondering, I was the photographer! Ido have to admit that since it's not physically possible to take a candid photo of yourself (by definition) I got my friend Shaun in to shoot some candids since I didn't want to wear a camera on me for the ceremony, but I did all the formal photos.
Speaking of the formal photos, a strange thing happened to me on my wedding day:
We got married at a friend's house near Oak Hammock Marsh. The day started off strangely when the only thing I forgot was my shoes and sox, so I had to get married in my runners. That wasn't such a big deal compared to what happened for the rest of the day: First, Camille almost got sucked up by the insane tornado-like winds that hit us just as I was starting to take our couple's photos. The winds were so strong they blew over my rifle shooting platform, almost 500 lbs of wood! Then, after scrambling back into my SUV to get back to the garage where we were having the reception (this is a 10 car garage, large enough to fit over 100 people with the food and drink areas and a dance floor). When we got into the reception area, the rain was pounding so hard on the roof, it was too loud to talk to anyone. Thankfully that lasted only 20-30 minutes, but then, later in the evening in the middle of our speeches, one of our friends collapsed from either heat exhaustion or new meds and had to be taken away in an ambulance! She's fine now, but that was a real scare!
The evening finally ended and just as we were the last people to leave, the Northern Lights became active for just 3 minutes, but it was just enough time to get a shot of Camille and I!
Huge thanks to all our guests for their help and generosity and special thanks to Shaun, my photographer!
This photo was taken by me right at the end of the reception at about 2am

Today I am finally able to announce some very special news: One of my photos was selected to be on a 10 million run of Canada Post stamps!
Last year the Downtown Winnipeg Biz created a living event for the city and was planning to do one again this year. The organizer, Jason, decided just for fun to contact Canada Post to see if they wanted to use the image for a stamp. Canada Post didn't get back to them right away but, with only a few weeks to go they finally did contact him with great interest. The first photographer Ron, who worked with them last year was set to shoot a straight on shot of the flag. However the Downtown Winnipeg Biz contacted me to be a second photographer because in talking with Canada Post they had mentioned they liked an angled shot of the flag more, so, I was to be the photographer shooting the angled shot.
For the event I was up in a 60" scissor lift in the scorching sun.
Finally after 3 weeks, Canada Post finally contacted the Downtown Winnipeg Biz to confirm that they had chosen my image to be on the stamp! This stamp is part of a collection of Canada Post stamps commemorating on some interesting locations where the Canadian Flag is found around the world.
A collage of me shooting the event by my fiancée Camille
They are going to produce 10 million of the stamps with my image on them and they will be available starting in January 2013. They are also producing a 200000 run commemorative edition where I will be directly credited. (Because it would be REALLY hard to read my credit on a 1" stamp! ;)
This is one of those once in a career opportunities (such as when I photographed the Queen from 3 feet away) so I'm extremely proud to have been a part of this project. HUGE thanks to Jason and Canada Post!

July 10, 2012
Unfortunately due to being busy, sometimes, photos get left on the back-burner so long that they get forgotten, especially when the client doesn't need them in any rush, at all...even a little. Unfortunately that was the case for these two archives from...2011! OOPS!
Time-lapse photography: Today I checked on my out of town cameras and upgraded some gear.
July 5, 2012
Time-lapse photographer: How do you take a two month time lapse?
Sure, if you just want to shoot your front yard for a month or two that's no problem, but, if you have to leave multiple remote cameras in another part of the province both inside and outside in unsecured areas for two months, and all this without their own power and with minimal supervision, how do you do it?
This past weekend I tested two such cameras and today I set them up with two more coming at another location. I can't announce the client or location until the project goes public but suffice it to say that this was a really fun challenge and I can't wait to see the results for myself!

Wedding photography: Dave and Candice
Years ago I stopped taking weddings due to being a very busy bee being an event photographer and commercial photographer, however, once in a while I dust off the old wedding cameras to shoot a friend or family member's wedding. Although Dave and I don't share blood, we've worked together so much over the last seven or eight years that I couldn't say no to him and was honored when he asked me to shoot his wedding.
When you shoot a wedding for a model who has had her photos taken by the likes of Playboy and other such publications, you want to make sure you're at your best! Just the day after their wedding I showed them a gallery of their photos and they were both really happy with them stating "That's EXACTLY what we wanted" which made me very happy!

Winnipeg stock photography: Fireworks over the Provencher bridge (Esplanade Riel)
Some days it doesn't even pay to get out of bed. That was the case tonight when I shot some fireworks near the Forks. Only once before have I only been able to shoot one song for an artist playing at the MTS Centre (Celine Dion) and that was the case for Bryan Adams. The one song lasted four minutes which doesn't sound like a lot of time but when you've played this game before it's plenty!

Tonight I take a flight out to the nation's capital to shoot two days of intense running events for Marathon-Photos.com (MP). I'm a runner myself and having shot for MP for several years now it's an honour to get to travel to shoot one of their events.

Today I was asked by Tourism Winnipeg to appear in a video promoting photo contests. They asked me for my professional opinions on photo contests and the cameras used to produce the images therein. This was difficult since I have many opinions but none of them professional. ;) However, I still think the video went well: See the video here.
High resolution commercial & stock photography: Assiniboine Park
For the last few years I have provided high resolution photography (up to 700 megapixels) to clients who needed it. Today, I shot several different locations at Assiniboine Park (of who I am very thankful to be the official photographer for) for use in large trade displays.

Concert photography: Rammstein
This was THE best concert I have ever been to. I've been to everything from Metallica to Rob Zombie and everything in between and around the corner and I am fairly sure I will NEVER see that much fire, explosions and energetic rock for a long time! Amazing show!

After being the first photographer in WPG with a BLOG I'm now the last to use Twitter. ( I guess I'm not the techno geek I thought I was!)
While at the NMC conference I talked to their social media squad and got some info on Twitter amongst other things and decided to finally sign up. During the conference I will be making my first Tweets, all with photos!
You can now follow me on Twitter where I plan to post behind the scenes photos, backstage shots as well as other interesting tidbits. Check out the entries here: Follow @DanHarperPhoto

Today I had the massive honour of being interviewed for an article for my Alma mater: Université de Saint-Boniface. They were creating a feature article on past students who are doing well in their fields which is to appear in a future edition of their newsletter. It's always nice to be recognized in any way in the photography world, especially by my Alma mater.

Out of my brain and through my camera.

New gear: Another new addition to my gear this month is the Nikon D800.
There has already been much discussion about how this camera, being 36 megapixels and very close to medium format digital size and quality will affect the industry. I just want to take pictures with it. ;)
Over the next month I'll be extensively testing both this and the Nikon D4 and giving real world reviews on both.

New gear: Normal visitors to this BLOG can ignore this post, only those photo enthusiasts such as myself will appreciate this. Today I finally upgraded my 4 year old DSLR from a Nikon D3 to the brand new Nikon D4. It's likely, just like with the Nikon D3 that I purchased the first Nikon D4 available in Winnipeg, but that's only because I camped out in front of Don's Photo in a tent.
Although some people are fooled by expensive photo gear, thinking it can make them a better photographer, it can't. However, having a new camera is like getting a new car...all that new camera smell! And, next week I'm getting yet another camera!

Commercial event photography: The Broadcasters Association of Manitoba had me shoot their AGM.
Shooting commercial events is one of my favourite things to do. You get to hang out in someone else's world for a day or an hour and get a sense of what their field is like. In some cases, such as the BAM event, you even hear about interesting concepts and things coming into play in their industry.
As the official photographer for events at the MTS Centre, Winnipeg, I offered the opportunity for people to shoot the Monster trucks event today to anyone from my photo community, the WPC. From a handful of people who applied I selected Doug P. to shoot the event. Huge thanks to Doug!
I finally had some time to go back and add some galleries from the summer. Here's some stock photos of the fireworks from the Red River Ex 2011

Engagement photos: Despite only doing wedding and engagement photography for really good friends or family now, I still managed to photography my OWN. :-> I very happily took my own engagement photos of my fiancée Camille and I around our favourite area, St B!
There was no one there but her and I and despite the cold and having to control the camera myself and then jump into the picture, I think the photos turned out ok.

Stock photography: This whole week there was some beautiful hoarfrost throughout the city. This panoramic image is just one of the great examples!
Today I had a last minute call due to the in climate weather here in the 'Peg to photograph some of the warming huts at the Forks. Unfortunately despite the warm weather being great to get out and skate, had a negative effect on the snow and ice based warming huts at the forks so they needed immediate photographing before they melted!

Commercial heads hots/portraits for the Manitoba FASD Centre
Another more unknown part of my business is doing paid critique work to help out upcoming photographers. Today I did a critique for Robert, a student who graduated from the Red River Photography program and who wanted a critique from a photographer in the industry.
Robert told me after the critique that despite some of the feedback not being as positive as he'd hoped for, he really appreciated the "kick in the pants" since it's hard to get good solid critique from anyone but a full time photographer.
