As many people do I was looking back at all the stuff I've done in 2008 and wondering
what my photographic highlight of the year was? What's interesting for me in
looking back
at 2008 is what it WASN'T:
-It wasn't any of the big bands I shot like the Foo Fighters, Matt Good, Airborne,
Queens of the Stone Age, Lenny Kravitz, James Blunt, Chris Cornell, Ill Scarlet,
Rise Against, Judas Priest, Jet Set Satellite, Seether, Megadeath or even Neil
Young or even any of the locals bands.
-It wasn't all the really fun band promos, model shoots, commercial shoots, weddings,
engagements, newdoir (new style of boudoir) or sports shoots like the Goldeyes
baseball or Moose Hockey.
-It wasn't even being the (an) official photographer for so many great great
companies such as Power97 (where I just shoot concerts and crazy people), Travel
Manitoba (where I got to travel the city and take pictures of our picturesque
locations and people), the Jewish Foundation (where I learnt about a people that
I didn't know anything about at first), Festival du Voyageur (where I had to
bundle up to the max just to take pictures every day), Hooters (who I've shot
exclusively for for over three years and where every shoot is always fun!), Destination
Winnipeg (where I got to shoot some very important and exiting events for WPG
such as the Manito Ahbee and Canadian Country Music Awards).
-On a personal level it wasn't even any of the multitude of starscape, startrail
or other rural Manitoban photo excursions I went on.
-And even more strangely it wasn't even any of the events for the WPC, (a photo
club I created in 2004) where I planned well over 30 events including a legal
workshop, free model shoots, and several contests with the biggest photo stores
in town.
No, it wasn't any of that.
My photographic highlight of the year was going on an overnight photo shoot in
the Whiteshell with DaveB where we shot the sundown, starscapes, the sunrise
and then all the way home back to Winnipeg. It was my highlight because it was
exactly the shoot that I've wanted to do for years now: A non-stressful, sporadic,
and beautiful trip in a Manitoban location that I've never been to before.
Thanks to everyone for all the memories in 2008 and here's to more in
2009!

A personal initiative I've taken on is to create a different perspective on photography.
But how to do that? I've already done "HDart" photos, but I wanted
something that really increases the experience of looking at a photo, something
that will really make you feel like you where "there".
So, a few months back I took on VR photography. It's got some great applications
for the real estate and interior design industries but I also really like to
give
people
an enhanced experience of the places I visit on all my photo excursions.

Today marked a landmark event for WPGphoto, the local photography club I created
in 2004 and run on a volunteer basis: The first WPGphoto.com club gallery show!
I've organized, judged, created a relationship with Photo Central and been working
on this gallery show for over a month now and it finally came to fruition tonight
with great feedback from all the members and public in attendance.

Nikon Fisheye modification for FX
Almost two months ago I wrote an article of how I modified my Nikon 10.5mm DX
Fisheye to be used on FX cameras. By popular demand I have now added that article
to my site.

I've just gotten into a very specialized type of photography: Virtual tours/Virtual
Reality 360 degree panoramic photography. This is where you will see a landscape
or the interior of a building and be able to look at it in all angles and tour
the full house or see the whole landscape as if you where standing right there!
I've always been interested in showing people places they've never been to and
being able to convey to them what it feels like, rather than just what it looks
like. These VR tours give the best feeling of a place that I've been able to
give so far.
The following tour was shot for a company out of Saskatchewan for the Health
Sciences Centre Foundation million dollar lottery

Sports shoot: Running Room's Hypothermic Half Marathon
As regional manager for TPS Sports Photos I was in charge of shooting and hiring
another photographer to shoot the 2008 Running Room's Hypothermic Half Marathon
at Fort Whyte Alive.
As a long distance runner myself it's hard to choose between shooting an event
like this and running it but it's always fun to be involved experience the event
at
any level.

Old band promos become new again: I shoot the
local band "Lives of Many" quite often, mainly because
I really like their music! I'm at most of their live shows which
are always energetic and I've shot several promos for them over
the last couple of years. So, I was happy to see that they're exclusively
using my photos

Happy Louis Riel day!
It's an interesting thing Louis Riel day. In other places they call it Family
Day, but here, we name it after what most would consider a hero.
I am not French, but I do speak it fluently. When I was put into kindergarten,
my mother put me into the French Immersion program. I was the first Winnipeg
class to offer French Immersion, something my mom's friends didn't understand
and questioned her about: "What good will that do him?" The answer
is now a lot!
After graduating grade 12 with a level one French diploma I spent over Five years
without speaking French. Even in school you would never speak French to your
friends (being in an English school). However, at the end of the 90's I found
the perfect program for myself "Communication Multimédia" offered
at Collège St. Bonniface. Eight out of the 20 kids in the class where
straight out of France. A very different kind of French to even that which I
was used to. So, after the first day joke of "I don't speak Japanese" (an
SNL reference) I relearned French and now feel as at ease with it as I do English.
I may not be a true French Manitoban but I'm proud of what French heritage I
have and happy that we have a day commemorating true French Manitoban heritage.
Reading the papers and seeing the pictures and paintings showing people and places
at the time of Louis Riel reminds me of one of the main reasons I took up photography:
I have a bad memory and I like to use photography to supplement it. Rather than
use up all my my brains memory, I choose to "photograph and forget" as
I call it, therefore saving up precious storage space for technical information.
However, what this also shows me is the importance of photography for documentation
an the history of a place or people, more specifically family. So on this Louis
Riel Day, this Family Day, don't forget to commemorate the occasion and photography
some memories you'll be able to remember years down the road.

Winter stars capes
I realized just how dangerous it is to shoot stars capes at 2am when it's -44c
when my hands froze in under 30 seconds and I couldn't dismantle my cameras to
put them in the bags.
If you're shooting anything outside be careful!

Northern Lights (Auroras) & Stars capes
Early this morning with a temperature of -34 (-45 with the wind chill) after
seeing that the Northern Lights where active enough to see outside Winnipeg I
took off in search of a good shooting position. As usual it was impossible to
see them at all from inside the city but after going outside the perimeter where
there is less ambient light, they became more visible. Sadly by the time I got
into position they had become less active. But it's always interesting to see
them at all, even when they're not as active.

The Dan Harper, $100 challenge
As a personal challenge this year I am going to try to always have a camera with
me. I think it's important as an exercise for all photographers not only to take
photographs but to be both documentarians and anthropologists in order to study
people and the human element. Keeping that in mind it's key to always have a
camera on hand in order to capture all types of moments.
In order to make my personal challenge more interesting I will give the first
person to catch me without a camera $100.
The rules are simple:
-The "camera" can be any device that can record an image/video however
not only do I need to have a camera with me but it needs to work. So, if I don't
have a memory card, film, a DV tape, my battery is dead, or for any reason am
unable
to record your image, you get the $100.
-In requesting the $100 you have to consent to having your photo taken and put
on my online gallery of attempted $100 challengers. (If you're not willing to
participate then you don't qualify.)
-The first person to catch me without a functioning camera or recording device
gets the $100 (I will give you an IOU as I don't carry $100 on me).
*Please note that there are only two exeptions to this challenge and that is
when I am working out or any place that does not allow cameras.
